What is Dosing in Food Manufacturing?

Should you pay your local general practitioner a visit, and they suggest a quick injection of liquid medication to cure your ailment, you would naturally trust that they know the importance of accurate dosing before they press the contents of the syringe into your arm and they don’t just eyeball it and hope for the best.

The same can be said for dosing in the food-manufacturing industry. Once the production line has finished with its run and batches of ingredients have been mixed, minced, and packaged into the finished product that we enjoy every day, the line may be left with biological residues that might induce the growth of germs and other bacteria. These residues have to be removed and any contact surfaces need to be thoroughly cleaned, washed, and sterilised before the next load of product can begin.

Because consumers ingest the finished products, the cleansing engineers have to ensure that there are no contaminants or hidden bacteria along the entire length of the production line. Each piece of equipment, from the start of the mixing process through to the packaging area have to be methodically and meticulously cleaned. This takes specialised cleaning materials and chemicals that, if applied correctly, can almost guarantee a germ-free environment.

How Do they Do That?

The process of ensuring a spotless workplace is a task that cannot be left to the eyeballers. Specialised equipment mixes water, gases, or other liquids with exact proportions of particular cleaning fluids and chemicals together in order to produce an ideal cleaning solution for a specific piece of equipment. This solution is then either sprayed, rubbed, or dressed onto the various pieces that make up the production line until the length of it is suitably sterilised. The process of mixing the water, gases, or chemicals together into one cleaning solution is called dosing.

Dosing has become extremely popular across many industries but has been aggressively adopted in the food-manufacturing industry because of the level of precision and accuracy with which the various chemicals, gases, and liquids can be mixed together in order to form the perfect cleaning solution.

Why use the Dosing Method?

A principal benefit of using the dosing system, also known as the measuring system, is that the dilutions of the various mixtures can be done at the point of use, by the end user with the aid of a chemical dispenser. The engineer can mix the solution to the exact measurement required to complete specific tasks on specific pieces of equipment.

It is also the most economical use of the cleaning chemicals as there is almost zero wastage. This doesn’t only save money on the chemical usage but, more importantly, it prevents over- or underuse of the cleaning solution.

Overuse of an individual chemical in a cleaning solution could cause caustic residues to remain behind, which might taint the taste of the product being produced, whereas underuse might not clean the equipment thoroughly enough, which could cause bacterial or microbial growths on the working surfaces. This, in turn, could contaminate the product and potentially result in food poisoning.
